The Cave Church in The Garbage City.
Around 12:00 PM, we will meet you at your hotel and begin your private tour to one of Cairo’s most fascinating and unique hidden gems — the Cave Church of St. Simon the Tanner.
We will drive to Garbage City (Manshiyat Naser), a remarkable neighborhood where many local families have traditionally worked in garbage collection and recycling as a family business. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to see a different side of Cairo and learn about the unique lifestyle and traditions of the local community.
We will then continue to the Cave Church of St. Simon the Tanner, also known as the Monastery of St. Simon. It is considered one of the largest and most remarkable churches in Egypt. What makes this site particularly special is its extraordinary design, as the church and its seating area are carved directly into the natural rock of the Mokattam Mountain.
The church features impressive rock-carved architecture, large seating areas, beautiful religious artwork, and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Cairo. Your guide will share the fascinating history of the church, the story of St. Simon the Tanner, and the traditions of the local Coptic community.
